Ontario Early Years Literacy E-Bulletin December 2008

Hi there,

This Early Literacy E-Bulletin is about two subject areas which impact learning in young children.

1. Self Esteem in Young Children

A healthy self esteem is important because it provides the foundation for our ability to respond actively and positively to the opportunities of life – in work, in love, and in play. One of the greatest gifts adults can give children is helping them build and maintain healthy self esteem.

2. Caregiver Burnout

Unfortunately, many early childhood educators leave the profession because of issues related to burnout. Relaxed and happy early childhood educators create positive work and learning environments for children, families and co-workers. New Year’s resolution-making season is coming soon. What better time to examine the issue of caregiver burnout? Knowledge and understanding about caregiver burnout can help us make conscious and concrete decisions to reduce its effect for all those who work in the preschool workplace.

If you know someone who might want to receive the E-Bulletin, ask them to e-mail or telephone me and I will put their address on my list.

Thanks,

** Caregiver Burnout Information **

www.helpguide.org is website that provides information about a variety of issues related to mental health and everyday life. Being able to recognize the signs and symptoms of impending burnout gives the opportunity to take steps to prevent it. Effective burnout-busting strategies include taking care of ourselves emotionally and physically, asking for help when we need it, and staying connected to other people. Preventing Burnout outlines symptoms and strategies for job-related and caregiver-related burnout. Information important for all caregivers is found in both these categories.
