Research shows that narrative skills are important for children to have to be ready to read. Narrative skills are essential to reading comprehension.

Here are some ideas to help develop narrative skills in young children:

bulletUse props as you tell or read a story. This helps the children remember it better.
bulletEncourage the children to use the props as they retell the story.
bulletAsk some questions about the story. Thinking about the story and putting it into words takes time. Remember to give lots of time for the children to come up with the answers.
bulletTalk about the story after you have read it. Summarize the plot or main idea for the children.
bulletTalk about their day; what did they do first, second, third and so on.
bulletAsk your children to retell their favourite story.
bulletRead developmentally appropriate, quality picture books to children often.
